PSG Defeats Marseille on Penalties to Claim French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening cup on fourteen separate times.

The Parisian giants needed a stoppage-time leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to get past Marseille in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive French Super Cup victory.

The Champions League holders appeared to be sailing towards a comfortable win in the showdown featuring the French league champions and the Coupe de France holders after the French winger found the net early on.

Yet, the southern French side fired two times in the closing moments to seize a surprise lead. First, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, the Portuguese striker snatched a crucial leveler in the dying seconds to send the contest into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping crucial attempts from Matt O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Goncalo Ramos, the midfielder, the full-back, and the young talent all converted with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing shootout victory.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 runners-up Olympique de Marseille after completing a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the last thirteen seasons.
